Information Just for Teens

If you are a teen who would like to have therapy but don't want your parents or caregiver to know about it, there are laws that can make this possible. In general, anyone under the age of 18 needs to have parental consent to receive mental health services, but there are many exceptions to this law. There may be reasons that you do NOT want your parents to know you are seeing a therapist and it may be in your best interest for them not to know. The law makes room for this because there are many times that teens don't want to tell their parents that they are seeing a therapist, but the teen needs the support of a professional. If this is the case, I can make sure that you meet the criteria under the law to receive therapy without your parents knowledge or permission. If you do not meet this criteria, please know that I always establish ground rules ahead of time to ensure your privacy. So lets say that you do need parental consent and yet there are things you do not want your parents to know, I will establish ground rules with your parents to ensure your privacy. I am usually able to help parents understand that your privacy in therapy is critical for my ability to help you. Most parents understand this and can respect this when I explain it to them. Don't let fears about your parents knowing you want therapy stop you from reaching out for help. I can always work out something for every situation to help a teen. Go ahead and contact me, and we can figure it out.

Payment for services. If you do meet the criteria for therapy without parental consent, you will be responsible to pay for therapy. We can work out a small fee that you are able to afford, but I do charge for therapy. If you do not have any money for therapy and for some reason cannot find a way to pay for therapy, we can work out something or I can refer you to a free program that will see you. I have a lot of resources that I can help you with, so don't allow money to be a concern. And, by the way, I don't charge for the first session. I consider our first meeting a free consultation. So money doesn't have to be a problem for you.
