I educate all of my clients, especially trauma survivors, to learn to listen to their bodies, emotions and instincts. This book educates readers all about the importance of your emotions and being able to reconnect with your innate instincts and inner wisdom. An important book about the physiology of trauma. It is only through understanding the physiology of trauma that one can begin healing from its consequences.

One of the most important books about the study of trauma and trauma related psychological problems. Dr. Herman is known for her expertise in the treatment of trauma.

"The Principles of Trauma Therapy"

A great book for therapists interested in working with survivors of traumatic events!

"Rebuilding Shattered Lives"

Another good book for therapists who work with PTSD and Dissociative Disorders. Note I have not read this book but have heard that it was very good.

"Trauma and the Body"

Pat Ogden is one of the leading experts on working with trauma and the body. Her work is very important and timely. Very good book.

"Color Atlas of Sexual Assault"

Book for professionals who work with sexual assault victims that shows medical findings of sexual assaults.

"Treating Child Sex Offenders and Victims"

Excellent resource for therapists who work with young sexual offenders and victims. Books focus is on treating sexual offenders in treatment programs.

"Sexualized Children"

I highly recommend books written by Eliana Gil, who is highly experienced in the treatment of abused children and adolescents.

"Betrayed as Boys"

Dr. Gartner's book about the sexual abuse of boys is a very important resource. The issues facing males who have been sexually abused vs. girls are different and require different treatment methods and an understanding of the differences experience by survivors.

"The Trauma of Sexual Assault"

This is one of the better books I have read on helping sexual assault and rape survivors. I highly recommend this book.

Book about working with clients who have Borderline Personality Disorder and PTSD.

Excellent book for helping women who have been raped. Book specific to women.

A "Must Have" book for anyone who had addicted parents or a dysfunctional family with abusive behaviors.

"Family Secrets: The Path to Self-Acceptance and Reunion"

Discusses the impact of family secrets on a family, the individual and generations. Very important book!

"Psychotherapy of the Borderline Adult"

Ever wish you had the 'how to' book on treating patients with BPD? This book is extremely helpful in working with BPD from a developmental approach.

This is a step-by-step practical guide for helping kids who are traumatized or abused.

This book is more specific in the use of EMDR with survivors of childhood abuse.

"Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Second Edition: Basic Principles, Protocols, and Procedures"

This is the handbook used to train therapists how to perform EMDR. Please note, only therapists who have gone through EMDR training through the EMDR Institute can use EMDR to treat clients.

"A Therapist's Guide to EMDR"

A useful book that is easy to read and straight forward for therapists trained in the use of EMDR.




"The Stranger in the Mirror"

Dr. Steinberg is a leading authority on Dissociative Identity Disorder. She documents her theory about Dissociative Identity Disorder in this book. She developed one of the key assessment tools utilized to assess clients with dissociative disorders.

"The Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder."

While this book may be older, Dr. Frank Putnam continues to be one of the leading authorities about the treatment of DID.

"Dissociation in Children and Adolescents"

This book is an examination of the development of dissociative disorders in childhood. It helps the reader understand the origins of Dissociative Disorders

"Treating Dissociative Identity Disorders"

A good overview of the treatment of DID. Some very useful interventions. I recommend it but find that Dr. Putnam's books have been the most influential for me.

"Cult and Ritual Abuse: Its History, Anthropology, and Recent Discovery in Contemporary America"

While there is a lot of skepticism about ritual and cult abuse, it is a topic that cannot be ignored when working with survivors of extreme abuse. Important for therapists to review.

Satanic Ritual Abuse: A Guide for Therapists"

Dee Brown's book is a controversial book written specifically for therapists working with SRA survivors. I found this book to be very helpful! I highly recommend it! Great starting place.

"The Dilemma of Ritual Abuse: Cautions and Guides for Therapists"

Critical book for any therapist or professional working with a Ritual Abuse Survivor. Its focus is ensuring appropriate treatment for Ritual Abuse Survivors. MUST READ!

"Satanic Ritual Abuse"

Dr. Collin Ross is a leading expert in the treatment of Dissociation and Ritual Abuse. He has started treatment programs in three US hospitals and has developed treatment methods for psychiatrists and therapists.

"Bluebird: Deliberate Creation of Multiple Personality by Psychiatrists"

Dr. Colin Ross writes about the abuse by psychiatrists within the CIA creating multiple personality disorder. As controversial ritual abuse has been, there have been well documented cases of CIA and other groups creating MPD, now know as DID, in efforts to use people as hidden soldiers, trained from birth to be government soldiers called upon through the use of mind-control. Important book.

Very detailed book for practitioners of sandplay therapy. Useful book.

"Sandplay Therapy"

Good book to introduce sandplay therapy principles. Very practical overview. Very nice as it is applied to diverse orientations.

"Sandplay: Silent Workshop of the Psyche"

Great introduction to Sandplay and contains much more advanced information as well. Helpful for serious sandplay therapists.

"Sandplay: The Sacred Healing"

One of the most useful books I have found. I refer to this book often. Great resource. Gives you very practical information to do sandplay therapy and educates therapists about sandplay therapy.

"Images of the Self: The Sandplay Therapy Process"

Wonderful book about sandplay therapy. Written by experts in sandplay.



Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Clients

Quick and easy to read book about affirming therapy with gay and lesbian clients. Written from a Jungian perspective.

"Issues in Therapy with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Clients"

Useful book for considering different issues that may confront GLBT clients.

Important piece of literature. The needs of lesbian women are typically very different than that of gay men. However most literature focuses on the needs of men and apply it to the needs of women; a huge mistake that leaves lesbian women inappropriately served.


Excellent book for working with lesbian women in psychotherapy. Comprehensive feminist perspective that examines common issues seen in lesbian populations. I highly recommend this. A must have!

Important book about GLBT families. Positive affirming book for sexual minority and gender variant clients.

A wife's experience of loving a transgendered woman going through the transitioning process. Very good book for spouses of male-to-female transsexuals. Good for both partners to read.

"My Husband Betty"

A wife's experience of living with and loving a cross-dresser. Important book for women in similar situations.

A wonderful book about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Families. Important book to recommend for transgender clients as well as GLB clinets.
